I used to live on Worcester Road (91). The Worcesters built the house as a summer resident. My grandmother was a Worcester and one of her cousins built the house. My dad (Linc) used to have something to do with the society. He called it the “Hysterical Society”. My mother(Phyl) helped with the bicentennial quilt. Used to hang in the town hall. I miss Hollis very much and it will always hold a place in my heart.

Hello! I am doing some genealogical research on a famous ancester, Prudence Cumings Wright, who was born in Hollis. I did a websearch for her father, Samuel Cumings and your web page was one that came up. Thank you for being there! I live in neighboring Merrimack, NH, and should make a trip to your library to see what I can find!

Trying again… How did Hollis get its name? What entity or person was the town named after. Traced my family’s origin to Daniel Hollis (1700s) of eastern New York. Looking for more information. Thank you [email protected]

Sir/Madam: I will be visiting Hollis sometime around the date of September 23, 24, 25 and would like to make an appt. to review the town records. My ancestors were some of the original settlers of the area (Colburn/Wheeler). Is it possible to visit other than the times posted on the web site? I will give a society membership donation when I arrive. Your membership information form did not allow me to enter my current state of Colorado. Thank you for your time and assistance.

I was seeking information on why the city was named HOLLIS. As you may guess from my surname, I have reason to wonder. I did read the brief history and enjoyed it very much but failed to see why the name was chosen. A city’s name usually reflects some historic event or person that had a major influence upon it. Any information you could provide would be very much appreciated.

Now I try to find out this one and I hope you can help me a little bit.
Many thanks in advance and a lot of greetings from Germany…

Hello
I wonder if the Historical Society could help me in a task I have undertaken? Especially the help of Joan Tinklepaugh. I am trying to write a history of Memorial Park. I am trying to get the text of the address given by Governor Sherman Adams on 15 June 1946, dedication day, from the State of NH archives.
What I would need from Joan is the date of birth, names of parents and any other genealogical information on the 8 men who are honored there by a maple tree. They are
Earl F Bamford, Warren F Bartram, Albert A Charret, Frances R Dudley, Elliot R Lund, Donald C Petry, Grosvenor W Rice and David Rood (name on stone is Warren Rood).

We bought the old Abel Colburn house at 123 Worcester Road. According to the town records, the land was probably part of the original land of Peter Powers. It then passed on through several people until the house was built in 1850 and the barn was built in 1854. I plan to do a complete title search to study the history of the original farm. As a surveyor in my youth, I spent much time in Connecticut following old stone walls and looking for evidence of 200 year old roads. The history of land has always fascinated me. I plan to come to Wheeler House and study your archived material to supplement the title search. I do have one question: In studying the notebooks in the library which describe the history of the old parcels, there is a reference to (D.A.R.I. Fog End No.23-R.R. No. 569) Can you describe the reference? Also, the old Fog End schoolhouse used to sit on the farm – just north of our current stonewall boundary. It was sold in 1925 by Henry Hayes to someone in Pepperell. Does anyone know if and where this structure still exists? One point of interest -there is a closet in the attic of the house that was lined with old newspapers dated 1874. I have not removed them for fear of damage. Does the Historical Society have an interest in salvaging and preserving them? Also, we have some photos from the 1916-1918 era of the farm if you are interested in making reproductions.
